Applicant: Good morning. sir. Have you received my scholarship application form?

Professor: Yes. It reached us this morning.

Applicant: Marvelous! How does it look? Do you think that I will receive a scholarship?

Professor: Looking at your application, I'd say you have a better than excellent chance at getting one of our academic scholarships. But I do want to tell you that our scholarships only cover tuition and living expenses. Travel and entertainment are both things you'll have to cover on your own.
教授：從你的申請來看，我可以說你很有可能申請到我們學(xué)院的獎學(xué)金。但我要告訴你的是，我們的獎學(xué)金只負擔(dān)學(xué)費和生活費。旅行和消遣的費用得你自己承擔(dān)。
Applicant: That shouldn't be a problem for me. I think I can manage travel expenses and any other thing that pops up by myself.

Professor: If you need to. you can always get a student loan from the bank. Lots of students go this route.

Applicant: If things get desperate. I'll certainly call the bank, but not until I need to. Thank you for the suggestion though.

1.“on one's own”表示“獨自地，獨立地”，與下文的“by oneself”同義。另外，還可以表示“主動地，自愿地”，例如：Ever since
her father's death，Mary had been on her own.（自從她父親死后，瑪麗一直靠自己獨立生活。）
2.“pop up”是俚語，意思是“（意外地、突然地）出現(xiàn)，發(fā)生”。例如 : Your name has popped up from time to time in the
papers. （你的名字不時地出現(xiàn)在報紙上。）
3.“go this route”是俚語，意思是“用這個方法，走這條路”，相當(dāng)于“use this method”，注意“route”有兩種發(fā)音：[ru:t]和[raut]。

有杰出的學(xué)術(shù)成績；

大部分獎學(xué)金都依據(jù)學(xué)術(shù)成績而發(fā)放，獲得者由各自所在的院系提名。
