表示“許可”，我們一般用陳述句[若用疑問句則表示“請(qǐng)求 (request)”，見第87小節(jié)]?？隙ǖ年愂霰硎?ldquo;允許某人做某事”；否定的陳述則表示“不允許某人做某事”。表示許可常用的情態(tài)動(dòng)詞有may，might，can，could。但我們多用can或be allowed to do。
（1）肯定句——給予許可
例句
a. I can leave the office as soon as I have finished. = I am allowed to leave the office…
我工作一結(jié)束就可以離開辦公室。
b. You can use my car tomorrow.
明天你可以用我的車。
c. — May I turn on the TV?
我可以打開電視嗎？（may用在疑問句中表示 “請(qǐng)求許可”）
—Yes, of course you may.
當(dāng)然可以。（may用在肯定的陳述句中表示 “給予許可”）
（2）否定句——拒絕許可（甚至禁止）
例句
a. —May I borrow your car?
（may用在疑問句中表示“請(qǐng)求許可”）
— No, I’m afraid you may not.
（may用在否定的陳述句中表示 “拒絕許可”）
b. You can’t take your camera into the museum.
相機(jī)不讓帶進(jìn)博物館。
c. You can’t take the test paper out of the classroom. = You are not allowed to take…
試卷不允許帶出教室。
我們還可用must not 表示強(qiáng)烈的拒絕——禁止。must not比can not，may not 語(yǔ)氣更強(qiáng)烈。
d. Students must not take the test papers out of the classroom.
任何學(xué)生不得把試卷帶出教室。
（3）could一般不用來(lái)表示現(xiàn)在的許可，而用來(lái)表示過(guò)去的許可
—Can I ask you a question?
—Yes, of course you could.* （不能這樣說(shuō)）
表示過(guò)去的許可時(shí)，could可與was/were allowed to do互換，例如：
I could / was allowed to read what I liked when I was a child.
我小的時(shí)候，愛看什么書，就看什么書。
不過(guò)，若表示過(guò)去允許進(jìn)行某項(xiàng)特定的活動(dòng)，我們要用was/were allowed to do。這一區(qū)別與could和was/were able to的區(qū)別類似，例如：
Yesterday evening, Peter was allowed to watch TV for an hour.
不能說(shuō)：Peter could watch…
could更多是用在陳述句中表示“建議” （見第90小節(jié)）；用在疑問句中表示“請(qǐng)求”。（見第87小節(jié)）
