Yesterday, we learned "Tell me what happened."說說看，怎么回事兒。So, if you ask someone" You want to tell me what happened here?" he'll tell you something. However, talking of something private, he maybe hangs back and stops. At this moment you'er interested in it and want to hear what else he'll say. What would you say? Let's get the answer from the following simple situational dialogue.

A : Do you want to hear more about what I did today?

B : Keep talking. It sounds like you had fun.

【答疑解惑】

It is "Keep talking." 意思是：繼續(xù)說下去. It's an informal way of encourage somebody to continue doing something. Keep doing something意思是：繼續(xù)做某事，堅(jiān)持做某事。 For example: Keep going, it's nearly there. 堅(jiān)持下去，已經(jīng)快到了。

Of course, I am sure you can blurt out many ways of expressing "繼續(xù)做某事，堅(jiān)持做某事"，taking the place of "Keep doing something."。I think, maybe, you would say：go on, keep up, hold on, stick out, carry on, keep on, and so on. But sometimes they cannot be replaceable. Let's look at the detailed uses of them on by one.

1 go onIt means "to continue an activity, especially after a pause or break".大家注意了，go on 是指在被中斷或停止后繼續(xù). If we want to say "繼續(xù)某事"，the phrase is "go on with something". Then how about "繼續(xù)做某事"?It is "go on doing something". f we don't refer to do something in particular, it's fine that we say "go on". Let's look at the following sentences. If you go on like this, you'll lose your job.如果你繼續(xù)這樣下去，你會(huì)丟掉差事的。I would rather go on with the experiment than give it up. 我寧可把實(shí)驗(yàn)繼續(xù)下去，也不愿放棄不做。He said nothing but just go on working. 他什么也不說只是不停地做事。

If we say "go on with somebody", 那完全是另一回事了。意思是：去你的，別胡扯。It sounds rude. For example: Go on with you, I am not too foolish to buy your story. 去你的，我還沒傻到去相信你的鬼話。Go on with you , what harm could it do?去你的，別瞎扯，這會(huì)有什么害處呀?

2 keep up It means "to continue to do or pay regularly ". 意思是：繼續(xù)支付;繼續(xù)做。注意這個(gè)短語是指有規(guī)律的堅(jiān)持繼續(xù)做某事，而不是之在一個(gè)時(shí)間段一直做某事。For example: If you don't keep up with your payment, you'll lose your house.如果你不繼續(xù)付款，你的房子就保不住了。記住了keep up with something 是繼續(xù)某事。We also can say it as "keep something up". For example:Well done! Keep it up.(Keep up the good work.) 干得好，繼續(xù)好好干下去。注意這里的用法是keep (something) up(something).如果是代詞，放于keep 和up之間，如果是名詞，可放于放于keep 和up之間，也可用于短語的后面。這個(gè)短與沒有動(dòng)名詞keep up doing something的用法。

3 hold on It means "keep something longer" 這個(gè)是繼續(xù)的意味，但準(zhǔn)確的說來是堅(jiān)持的意思，與go on和keep up所講的繼續(xù)的意思不同。. For example: She couldn't hold on longer and and fell into blackness, she drowned. 她再也堅(jiān)持不住了，眼前一片漆黑，昏了過去。這有忍受的意思在里面。How much longer do you think we can hold on? 你認(rèn)為我們還能堅(jiān)持多久? If we want to say"堅(jiān)持做某事"，how should we put it? Let's look at the sentence: A good man will hold on to his job. 有本事的人是不會(huì)離開自己的工作崗位的。Pay attention to the preposition "to"in this phrase "hold on to something".

4 stick out It means "to continue doing something to the end even if it is difficult or boring ". 堅(jiān)持下去：忍受下去。注意這里注重講的是堅(jiān)持有難度或是乏味的事情，做這些事情有不爽之感，甚至有勉強(qiáng)之感。For example: She didn't like the course, but she stuck it out to get the certificate. 她雖然不喜歡這門課，但是還是耐著性子堅(jiān)持把它學(xué)完了，得到了證書。Pay attention the phrase to structure: stick it/something out.指示代詞放于stick和out 之間。即便是名詞，也如此。He is determined to stick the race out even if he finishes last. 即便是他跑到最后一名，他也要堅(jiān)持跑完。

5 carry on It means "to continue doing something". 繼續(xù)做，堅(jiān)持干。這是只在一個(gè)時(shí)間段不停的做某事。The uses of it is similar to go on-----carry on, carry on with something, carry on doing something. Look at the following example sentences: He is in hot water but he finds courage to carry on. 在水深火熱之中，他勇于堅(jiān)持到底。They managed to carry on with their experiment in spite of difficulties. 他們不顧困難設(shè)法繼續(xù)完成了他們的實(shí)驗(yàn)。He carried on peeling the potatoes. 他不停地削土豆皮。

6 keep onIt means "to continue doing something". 繼續(xù)做，堅(jiān)持干。It completely equals to “carry on”. The uses of it is similar to go on—— keep on , keep on with something, keep on doing something. Here are some example sentences: Don't keep on interrupting me!別老是跟我打岔。 Yes, English grammar is quite difficult; but if you keep on with it, you will get a good grasp of it . 是的，英語語法是相當(dāng)難的，但是如果你堅(jiān)持學(xué)下去，就會(huì)很好地掌握它。I'm glad you began at once, and hope you will keep on. 你們立刻開始行動(dòng)了，我真高興。希望你們能持之以恒。
