英語早間課堂:Just Keep it down

There's a phrase which asks someone to quiet. It's similar to saying "Please quiet down". What's it? Let's listen to a simple situational dialogue. A : Would you keep it down?

B : Sure. I can turn this music off.

【答疑解惑】

Okay, guys, have you spotted it? It is " keep it down". "Keep" is a factitive verb which means make. "It" refers to something that disturbs someone else and it's used as object. "down" is a adverb which means low and it's used as complement of "it". "Keep it down" is very easy to think of it's meaning if we put it in a situation. 直譯是：是它下降。把聲音一步步的壓下來，那么環(huán)境安靜多了，不打攪大別人。因此它的意思就是：安靜點兒，小聲點兒。

We have more phrases to take place of " keep it down. " which are as follows: 1 quiet down For example: He managed to quiet those children down. 他使那些孩子們安靜下來。

2 settle down For example:The teacher told the students to settle down and study the text. 教師讓學(xué)生安靜下來學(xué)習(xí)課文. 3 quiet down For example: She soon quieted down and fell asleep. 她不久就安靜下來睡著了。 4 pipe down For example: He shouted at us to pipe down. 他大聲叫我們安靜下來。

Now let's talk about "keep down". "keep down " means "to hide yourself by not standing up straight". 是“蹲下，臥倒， 埋伏，隱藏”的意思。 For example: Keep down ! You must not let anyone see you .蹲下，一定不能讓人看見你。We have another phrase: keep somebody down which means " to prevent a person , or a group etc. from expressing themselves freely". 意思是：壓制，鎮(zhèn)壓，控制某人。For example: The people have been kept down for years by a brutal regime. 多年來，人們一直受著殘暴的壓制。We have one more phrase: keep something down which means "to make something stay at a lower level". For example: Keep your voice down, I don't want anyone else to hear. 小聲點，我不想讓任何人聽到。Keep the noise down. 小聲點兒。Keep down wages 保持低工資;keep down prices, 保持低物價; keep down the cost of life 保持低生活費(fèi)用。“Keep something down”has another meaning which is " not to bring something back through mouth from the stomack". 意思是：不嘔吐。For example: She's had some water but can't keep any food down. 他喝了點水，但是一吃東西就吐。

要點：would 是will 的過去式，表示一種婉轉(zhuǎn)的請求，譯為：請。

Would it be convenient for you to leave tomorrow? 明天走你方便嗎? 例句點撥：這句話中很明顯說話者是希望那個人走，可是為了不很明顯表露自己的想法，不傷害別人的感情，在此用would 就是話中還有話，就是叫別人明天走。

2 I can turn this music off. 翻譯： 我會關(guān)掉音樂的。

要點：can 在這里是表示說話者同意對方的要求。在句中因為b 開音樂吵到a了，a 教b安靜點，b同意a的要求，把音樂關(guān)掉。

All right, how many have you caught . 【JULIET，你怎么讀的和錄音的不一樣呀?】是的，沒錯，我的跟錄音有很大區(qū)別，錄音發(fā)的音是標(biāo)準(zhǔn)發(fā)音，我發(fā)的是美國人在日常生活中的真正發(fā)音。我們經(jīng)常聽不懂美劇中的句子和美國人說話，問題就在這里了。Now let's look at them one by one.

當(dāng)前一個單詞的最后一個字母是d，后一個單詞的第一個字母是 j 是， 美國人將其連讀為 [dj]

2 keep it down ['ki:bi'daun]

Keep 以爆破音而且是清輔音結(jié)尾，it 以原音開頭，前面的輔音[t]與后面的原因[i]連讀, 就成了[ti]，由于清輔音在原音面前可以濁化為濁輔音，因此[ti]就讀為[di]. It 是以爆破音[t]結(jié)尾, down 是以爆破音[d]開頭，前面的爆破音就是去爆破。因此 it down 就讀為 [i'daun].整個短語就讀為 ['ki:bi'daun]，重音在第一和第三個音節(jié)。

3 can [k?n]

Can 在肯定句中是弱讀的，在否定句中才是重讀。

4 music off ['mju:zig?:f]

Music 是以爆破音而且是清輔音結(jié)尾，off 以元音開頭，前面的輔音[k]與后面的元音連讀, 由于清輔音在原音面前可以濁化為濁輔音。
