LECTURE 94 基本動(dòng)詞 HAVE 15

1. have one's work cut out **有艱巨的任務(wù)

解 習(xí)語;詞義溯源:使[工作(work)] 安排給某人[使其準(zhǔn)備(cut out for)];one's work is cut out 表示“準(zhǔn)備好某人的任務(wù)”

例 While campaigner A can rely on a large reserve of good will from the people of eastern Mississippi, unless he can match campaigner B's campaign offers, he'll have his work cut out for him.

2. have other fish to fry **

解 習(xí)語;詞義溯源:擁有[更重要的事情、另一件要事(other fish to fry)];這里的other可以替換為bigger,better,more important等

例 While many other professors would jump at the chance to be the head of their department, biology professor Mary Scarton turned down an offer to head Christian University's biology school. “I have other fish to fry right now,” she was quoted as saying in her letter to the academic dean. “I'm in the middle of my research on aphids and don't want to be interrupted. ”

3. have pull with sb.

The days when a person who had pull with government officials could get special favors from the government are not over, but tough new regulations have curbed the practice dramatically during the Henderson governorship.

4. have sb. on the string **

Norton thought he had the principal on the string. He thought he could do anything and get by with it because the principal would never punish him. He was only deluding himself—Principal Bolton expelled him without hesitation.

5. have seen better days **
