詞組講解

1. give sb. to understand sth. ** 使理解，暗示

解習語；詞義溯源：告訴某人使其［理解（understand）］某事；通常使用given to understand（已相信）這一形式

例 We were given to understand that you would repair the machine without charge since its failure was due to a quality problem at your factory. We were rather surprised to receive an invoice for over $1,800. Surely your billing clerk made a mistake in charging us for this.

2. give sth. off / give off sth. *** 發(fā)出（光、聲音、香味等）

解短語動詞；詞義溯源：［遠遠地（off）］發(fā)出

例 Before you leave the house, heat a small, solid stone inside an oven. Then place it inside a wool sock. Carry it with you in your coat pocket when you go out and it will give off heat for up to two hours. It's a great way to keep your hands warm on a cold winter morning.
