Lesson 25 The Herring

第25課鯡魚(yú)

Herrings are a kind of fish that live in the sea. They like salt water. Indeed if they are put into fresh water, they soon die. Now the gold-fish which we read about the other day likes fresh water, and it would die in afew minutes if it were put into the sea.

鯡魚(yú)也叫鯖魚(yú),是一種生活在海里的魚(yú), 喜歡咸水。要是把鯡魚(yú)放到淡水里, 很快就會(huì)死掉。咱們以前學(xué)過(guò)的金魚(yú)卻喜歡淡水,要是放到海水里, 過(guò)幾分鐘就沒(méi)命了。

Herrings are good for food. Ask your mother to buy some fresh herrings, and then you can see what they are like. If she will cook some for dinner, you will find that they are very good to eat.

鯡魚(yú)是很美味的食品。讓媽媽買點(diǎn)兒鯡魚(yú)回來(lái), 就能看見(jiàn)它們什么樣了。媽媽把鯡魚(yú)做成菜, 你會(huì)覺(jué)得鯡魚(yú)肉很好吃的！

The herring is covered with scales. It has seven fins, and gills and eyes just like those of the gold-fish. Itgrows to a length of about one foot.

鯡魚(yú)的身體也蓋著鱗片, 有七個(gè)魚(yú)鰭, 也有魚(yú)鰓、眼睛, 跟金魚(yú)一樣。長(zhǎng)度大約有一英尺。

Let us cut open a fresh herring, and look into it. We see that, like all fishes, it has a very long backbone made up of many little joints.

咱們把鯡魚(yú)切開(kāi), 看看里面吧。跟所有的魚(yú)一樣, 鯡魚(yú)也有一條很長(zhǎng)的脊椎骨, 是由很多脊椎組成的。

You sometimes find a herring full of roe inside. If you look at this roe, you will see that it is made up of thousands and thousands of little round grains like seeds. These are the tiny round eggs of the herring, and itis only the mother fish that has roe.

有時(shí)候你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)一條鯡魚(yú), 魚(yú)肚子里盛滿了魚(yú)子。仔細(xì)看魚(yú)子, 會(huì)看見(jiàn)它是成千上萬(wàn)個(gè)像種子一樣的小圓球組成的。這些小圓球就是鯡魚(yú)的卵, 只有母鯡魚(yú)才有魚(yú)子。
