A moment there was awful pause,
恰好那時(shí)光，空氣瞬間已凝固，
When Berkley CRIed, Cease, traitor! cease!
伯克萊高叫，住口！你這個(gè)叛徒！
God's temple is the house of peace!
上帝的殿堂，和平安寧之地！
The other shouted, Nay, not so,
另一聲音叫喊，不！絕非如此，
When God is with our righteous cause:
耶和華將會，與公正站在一起，
His holiest places then are ours,
上帝的住所，乃人間美夢天堂，
His temples are our forts and towers, That frown upon the tyrant foe:
神圣的瓊樓，為人間權(quán)利堡壘，它不會同意，被暴君搶奪盤踞。
In this the dawn of Freedom's day
難忘時(shí)刻中，反抗和禱告同在。
There is a time to fight and pray!
黎明星光里，自由與正義降臨。
And now before the open door,
禱告結(jié)束后，會場的大門打開，
The warrior priest had ordered so,
那軍隊(duì)祭司，開始向民眾游說，
The enlisting trumpet's sudden soar
高聲喇叭里，招募征兵的火爆，
Rang through the chapel, o'er and o'er,
經(jīng)久不停地，在會場上空起蕩，
Its long reverberating blow,
激昂的話語，乍響在民眾心頭，
So loud and clear, it seemed the ear, Of dusty death must wake and hear.
震撼并催醒，塵封瀕死的耳朵，萬民之驚悚，鼓樂齊鳴的浪潮，
And there the startling drum and fife
激勵著生者，投入殘酷的戰(zhàn)爭，
Fired the living with fiercer life;
看頭頂上空，烈火在蔓延燃燒，
While overhead with wild increase,
全然不再是，古老平和的鐘響，
Forgetting its ancient toll of peace,
風(fēng)聲中炸開，聲音已走調(diào)變樣，
The great bell swung as ne'er before:
聽起來好像，狂飆絕不會停息，
It seemed as it would never cease;
每一聲鐘聲，發(fā)泄著激情熱烈，
And every word its ardor flung, From off its jubilant iron tongue
鐵質(zhì)的音質(zhì)，不再有滿心喜悅，異口同聲呼喊，
Was, "WAR! WAR! WAR!"
“開戰(zhàn)！開戰(zhàn)！開戰(zhàn)！”
"Who dares"—this was the patriot's cry,
“誰敢參軍？” 那愛國者高叫，
As striding from the desk he came—
他離開桌子，大踏步來到面前，
Come out with me, in Freedom's name,
以自由名義，請與我奔向前線，
For her to live, for her to die?
為祖國生存，或者看著她滅亡？
A hundred hands flung up reply,
森林般大手，剎那間揮舞天空，
A hundred voices answered "I!"
雷鳴海嘯，吼聲震天“我去！”“我去！”
