"Who's that?" A rough voice asked the question; and now a heavy-looking man took the dog's place in the door.

“你是誰(shuí)？”一個(gè)粗厲聲音響起，一位臉色陰沉的男人在狗的身后閃出。

"How far is it to G—?" I asked, not deeming it best to say, in the beginning, that I sought a resting place for the night.

“請(qǐng)問(wèn)，這里離G地還有多遠(yuǎn)？”我問(wèn)道，乍開(kāi)口，才覺(jué)得并不合適，那時(shí)的我不過(guò)想找個(gè)過(guò)夜的地方。

"To G—!" growled the man, but not so harshly as at first. "It's good six miles from here."

“到G地去，”那男人大聲地說(shuō)，言語(yǔ)間卻少了最初的苛厲，“從這到那還有不近的六英里路呢。”

"A long distance; and I'm a stranger and on foot," said I.

“路真夠遠(yuǎn)的，我是步行來(lái)的，一個(gè)過(guò)路客，”我說(shuō)，

If you can make room for me until morning, I will be very thankful.

如果你們讓我在這歇上一晚，我真是感激不盡。

I saw the girl's hand move quickly up his arm, until it rested on his shoulder, and now she leaned to him still closer.

我看見(jiàn)那姑娘的手迅速上移，最后搭在那男人肩膀上，現(xiàn)在她貼那男人更近了點(diǎn)。

Come in. We'll try what can be done for you.

進(jìn)來(lái)吧，看看我們能給你幫上什么忙。

There was a change in the man's voice that made me wonder.

那男人語(yǔ)氣的變化讓我有點(diǎn)喜出望外。

I entered a large room, in which blazed a brisk fire.

我走進(jìn)房間，房間很寬敞，火苗輕快地跳躍著。

Before the fire sat two stout lads, who turned upon me their heavy eyes, with no very welcome greeting.

火堆邊坐著兩位粗碩身材的人，滿臉陰沉地打量著我，明顯帶著不快的神情。

A middle-aged woman was standing at a table, and two children were amusing themselves with a kitten on the floor.

一位中年婦女站在桌子旁邊，兩個(gè)孩子在地上逗著小貓玩。

"A stranger, mother," said the man who had given me so rude a greeting at the door; and he wants us to let him stay all night.

“媽媽，這位過(guò)路客，”剛才在門(mén)口粗魯?shù)嘏c我打招呼的那位男人說(shuō)道，他想在這里過(guò)上一夜。

The woman looked at me doubtingly for a few moments, and then replied coldly, "We don't keep a public house."

那婦人狐疑地打量我片刻，冷淡地說(shuō)，“我們這沒(méi)有客房。”

"I'm aware of that, ma'am," said I; "but night has overtaken me, and it's a long way yet to G—."

“我，我知道，夫人，”我說(shuō)，“不過(guò)，天太晚了，去G地路實(shí)在太遠(yuǎn)了。”

"Too far for a tired man to go on foot," said the master of the house, kindly,

“他走得太累了，前面的路那么遠(yuǎn)，”那好心的姑娘接著說(shuō)，

so it's no use talking about it, mother; we must give him a bed.

別說(shuō)了，媽媽，我們得給他準(zhǔn)備個(gè)睡覺(jué)的地方。
