means that there are two lanes — two cars next to each other — but the road is getting more narrow. 意思是有兩條車(chē)道——兩輛車(chē)緊挨在一起——因而道路變得更窄了。

The road becomes smaller and now you only have one lane, 路變窄了，而你只有一條車(chē)道可走，

To merge, "merge," as a verb means to take two things and to put them together. “Merge”，作動(dòng)詞的意思是把兩件東西合并在一起。
