At length, the man was found. He was well nigh drowned; but he was taken on board, and now they made for the ship.
最后終于找到了落水的人，他幾乎快要被淹死了，人們把他抬上小船。
But the ship rolled so dreadfully, that it seemed certain death to go near her.
現(xiàn)在他們開始啟程返回大船。可這時大船搖擺得異常劇烈，看起來只要接近它就會必死無疑。
And now, what should they do?
此時此刻，他們該怎么辦呢？
The captain told one of the men to go aloft and throw down a rope.
船長告訴其中一名船員，讓他站到高處往下扔條繩子。
This was made fast to the boat, and when the sea was somewhat calm it was hoisted, and all fell down into the ship with a dreadful crash.
繩子的一端被牢牢系在小船上，當海面稍微平靜時，把小船用繩子提了起來。隨著一聲巨大的撞擊聲，連船帶人一起落在了大船上。
It was a desperate way of getting on board; but fortunately no lives were lost.
這是一種不顧一切的收船方式，所幸沒有任何的人員傷亡。
On the dangerous points along our seacoast are lighthouses, which can be seen far out at sea, and serve as guides to ships.
沿著海邊的險要地點設有燈塔，從海上很遠的地方就能看到，它們是船只的路標。
Sometimes the fog is so dense that these lights can not be seen, but most lighthouses have great fog bells or fog horns;
有時候，霧霾太過濃重，從遠處看不到燈塔發(fā)出的光，但大多數(shù)燈塔都備有很大的霧鐘或霧笛，
some of the latter are made to sound by steam, and can be heard for a long distance.
有些霧笛的聲音是蒸汽機發(fā)出的，從很遠的地方就能聽得到。
These bells and horns are kept sounding as long as the fog lasts.
只要霧霾持續(xù)，這些霧鐘或霧笛就會一直響著。
There are also many life-saving stations along the coast where trained men are ready with lifeboats.
在海邊，經常遇到訓練有素的人員準備救生艇進行救援的情況。
When a ship is driven ashore they at once go to the rescue of those on board, and thus many valuable lives are saved.
當一艘船靠岸時，他們立刻沖上船去營救甲板上的人員，拯救了許多寶貴的生命。
Take it all in all, a sailor's life is a very hard one.
因此，總體來說，海員的生活是非常艱險的。
Our young friends owe a debt of gratitude to those whose home is upon the great waters, and who bring them the luxuries of other countries.
我們年輕的朋友們確實應該感激那些常年漂在海上，以船為家的人們，是他們給我們帶來了外國的好東西。
