I Measured It

A carpenter was giving evidence about an accident he had witnessed.

The judge asked him how far away he was from the accident.

The carpenter replied, “Twenty-seven feet, six and one half inches.”

“What? How come you are so sure of that distance?” asked the judge.

“Well, I knew some idiot would ask me. So I measured it!” replied the carpenter.

我量了一下

一個(gè)木匠在給一個(gè)他目擊了的事故作證。

法官問他當(dāng)時(shí)距離事故發(fā)生地點(diǎn)有多遠(yuǎn)。

木匠回答：“27英尺，6.5英寸。”

“什么?你怎么這么確定那個(gè)距離?”法官問。

“噢，我知道肯定有某些白癡會(huì)問我這個(gè)問題，所以我量了一下!”木匠回答。

詞匯講解】

1.carpenter，木匠。也可以作動(dòng)詞表示“做木匠活”：He carpentered when he was young.他年輕時(shí)當(dāng)木匠。

2.evidence證據(jù)。可以作動(dòng)詞， 是“表明”的意思：His tears evidenced great sorrow for what he had done.他的眼淚表明他對(duì)自己所做的事極為懊悔。

3.witness及物動(dòng)詞，目擊：Your actions witness your guilt.你的行動(dòng)足以證明你有罪。也可作名詞，就是“目擊者”、“證人”的意思。

4.accident意外，事故。它所指的未必都是不好的事情：Dick had been an accident by sending over flowers.這句話的意思可不是“迪克送花的時(shí)候出了事故”，而是“迪克送花來，真是出人意料。”

5.feet,inch。Feet是foot的復(fù)數(shù)形勢(shì)。因?yàn)槭?英尺以上，所以要用復(fù)數(shù)，變?yōu)閒eet。Inch是英寸，而不是英尺，不要被它的讀音誤導(dǎo)了。

6.measure測(cè)量/權(quán)衡/調(diào)節(jié)/斟酌：measure one’s words斟酌詞句;measure one’s foe估量自己的敵人。也可作名詞，是“尺寸”的意思：one’s waist measure腰圍尺寸。
