Somebody with Imagination

Several weeks after a young man had been hired, he was called into the personnel director's office.

“What is the meaning of this? “ the director asked, “When you applied for the job, you told us you had five years' experience. Now we discover this is the first job you ever held.”

“Well,” the young man said, “in your advertisement you said you wanted somebody with imagination.”

詞匯講解】

1.hire雇用。文中hire是及物動(dòng)詞的用法。如果是不及物動(dòng)詞，就是“接受雇用“的意思，常與介詞 “out/on”連用：He hired out as a farmhand.他當(dāng)了農(nóng)場(chǎng)雇工。

2.personnel主管人事的：sb.’s personnel file某人的人事檔案; a personnel man人事部職員

3.director經(jīng)理，主管。在不同的語(yǔ)境下有不同的職位的意思，如“局長(zhǎng)”、“處長(zhǎng)”、“校長(zhǎng)”、“導(dǎo)演”、“指揮”、“神父”等。

4.apply for a job申請(qǐng)就業(yè)。Apply是個(gè)很實(shí)用的詞，作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)，apply?to 是致力于? 的意思：He applied himself to learning French.他致力于學(xué)習(xí)法語(yǔ)。作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)，apply to有“適用”的意思：This rule applies to freshmen only.此項(xiàng)規(guī)定僅適用于大一新生。

5.discover發(fā)現(xiàn)，及物或不及物皆可，作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)：She discovered she had lost her purse. 她發(fā)現(xiàn)自己丟了錢(qián)包。作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)：The rumour is false, as far as I can discover.就我所知，傳聞不確。
