Why He Couldn’t Leave?

There was a meeting with a large number of people. At first the speaker was very interesting, but as time went on, he became very boring. Finally when he was through, there was only one man sitting in the large room.

The speaker walked up to the man and said, “Thank you for hearing me out when all the others left the room.”

“Oh! Don’t mention it!” replied the man, “I cannot leave because I am the next speaker.”

他為什么不能走

很多人在開會。一開始，講話的人還挺有趣的，可是漸漸的，他的講話越來越無聊。終于他講完了，大大的房間里只剩下一個人坐在下面。

講話的人走過去對那個人說：“感謝你在所有人都離開后還聽我說完。”

“哎，別提了!”那個人回答，“我不能離開是因為我是下一個要講話的人!”

詞匯講解】

1. There was a meeting with a large number of people.“with a large number of people”用來修飾“meeting”，說明這是一個有很多人參與的會議。

2.speaker講話的人。speaker在不同語境下有不同的意思：“ 演講者,發(fā)言者”：Our first speaker tonight is Mr. White.今晚我們的第一個演講者是懷特先生。“說某種語言的人”：He is an English speaker.他是講英語的。

“議長”：I'd like to propose a motion, Mr. Speaker.議長先生, 我想提出一項動議。“揚聲器, 喇叭“：The president addressed the students on the speaker.校長用揚聲器向學生們講話。

3.through完成。還可以指“通過, 過去”：Can I get through by this road?

4.walk up走向。 還可以指“向上走”：As the hillside was covered with snow, we had to walk up carefully.山坡積雪, 我們不得不小心翼翼地向上走。“請進”：Walk up, walk up! See the strongest man on earth!
