John Carpenter did not like to buy toys that somebody else had made.
約翰.卡朋特不喜歡買那些別人做的玩具。
He liked the fun of making them himself.
他喜歡享受自己動(dòng)手制作玩具的樂趣。
The thought that they were his own work delighted him.
想到那是自己的作品，他就會(huì)高興。
Tom Austin, one of his playmates, thought a toy was worth nothing unless it cost a great deal of money.
湯姆.奧斯汀是他的一個(gè)玩伴，他認(rèn)為一件玩具除非是花很多錢買回來的，否則就一文不值。
He never tried to make anything, but bought all his toys.
他從來不會(huì)自己做任何東西，所有的玩具都是買回來的。
"Come and look at my horse," said he, one day. "It cost a dollar, and it is such a beauty! Come and see it."
“來看我的馬，”有一天，他說，“它值一美元呢，它是多么漂亮??！快來看！”
John was soon admiring his friend's horse; and he was examining it carefully, to see how it was made.
很快約翰就喜歡上了朋友的馬，他認(rèn)真地查看，觀察它是怎么做成的。
The same evening he began to make one for himself.
當(dāng)天晚上，他就開始自己動(dòng)手做一個(gè)。
He went into the wood shed, and picked out two pieces of wood—one for the head of his horse, the other for the body.
他走進(jìn)木棚，挑了兩塊木頭——一塊用來做馬頭，另一塊做馬的身子。
It took him two or three days to shape them to his satisfaction.
他花了兩三天才做出自己滿意的造型。
His father gave him a bit of red leather for a bridle, and a few brass nails, and his mother found a bit of old fur with which he made a mane and tail for his horse.
他的父親給了他一點(diǎn)紅色的皮革做韁繩，還給了他一些銅釘，母親幫他找到一小片舊的毛皮，他用這個(gè)做了馬的鬃毛和尾巴。
But what about the wheels?
可是車輪怎么辦呢？
This puzzled him.
這可把他難住了。
At last he thought he would go to a turner's shop, and see if he could not get some round pieces of wood which might suit his purpose.
最后他想可以到車工的店里，看看是否能找到圓形的木片，也許可以達(dá)到他的目的。
He found a large number of such pieces among the shavings on the floor, and asked permission to take a few of them.
他在地上的刨花堆里找到了很多這樣的木片，征得同意后他拿了一些。
The turner asked him what he wanted them for, and he told him about his horse.
車工問他要這些木片來做什么，他跟他說起了他的馬。
