George says: "I am not afraid to throw it; but I do not want to."

I do not see that it will do any good, or that there will be any fun in it.

There! I told you he would not dare to throw it.

Why, George, are you turning coward?

I thought you did not fear anything.

Come, save your credit, and throw it.

I know you are not afraid.

Well, I am not afraid to throw.

Give me the snowball.

I would as soon throw it as not.

Whack! went the snowball against the door; and the boys took to their heels.

Henry was laughing as heartily as he could, to think what a fool he had made of George.

亨利想到愚弄喬治的情景，盡情地哈哈大笑。

George had a whipping for his folly, as he ought to have had.

喬治為他的愚蠢挨了一頓打，一如他應(yīng)該受到的懲罰。

He was such a coward, that he was afraid of being called a coward.

他真是個(gè)膽小鬼，他擔(dān)心別人說(shuō)他是膽小鬼，

He did not dare refuse to do as Henry told him, for fear that he would be laughed at.

不敢拒絕亨利叫他做的事情，因?yàn)楹ε聲?huì)因此受到嘲笑。

If he had been really a brave boy, he would have said, "Henry, do you suppose that I am so foolish as to throw that snowball, just because you want to have me?"

如果他真是個(gè)勇敢的孩子，他應(yīng)該說(shuō)：“亨利，你以為我會(huì)那么笨，只是因?yàn)槟阆胍胰幽莻€(gè)雪球，我就會(huì)照做嗎？”

You may throw your own snowballs, if you please!

Henry would, perhaps, have laughed at him, and called him a coward.

也許，亨利會(huì)嘲笑他，叫他膽小鬼。

But George would have said, "Do you think that I care for your laughing?"

然而喬治可以說(shuō)：“你以為我會(huì)在乎你的嘲笑嗎？”

I do not think it right to throw the snowball.

我認(rèn)為扔這個(gè)球是不對(duì)的。

I will not do that which I think to be wrong, if the whole town should join with you in laughing.

我不會(huì)去做我認(rèn)為是錯(cuò)的事情，哪怕全鎮(zhèn)的人都跟你一起嘲笑我。

This would have been real courage.

這才是真正的勇氣。

Henry would have seen, at once, that it would do no good to laugh at a boy who had so bold a heart.

亨利馬上就會(huì)看到，嘲笑一個(gè)有著如此勇敢的一顆心的男孩沒(méi)有任何好處。

You must have this fearless spirit, or you will get into trouble, and will be, and ought to be, disliked by all.

你必須有這種無(wú)畏的精神，否則你會(huì)陷入麻煩當(dāng)中，而你將會(huì)、也應(yīng)該會(huì)，為所有人所不恥。
