16 A Man's A Man For A' That 人總是人，不管那一切

Is there for honest poverty

君王可以欽賜佩帶冊(cè)封爵士，

侯爵、公爵，這樣那樣的!

但是清白的人可不服他的管--

老實(shí)說(shuō)，君王的權(quán)力對(duì)他毫無(wú)作用!

不管那一切，那一切，

他們權(quán)勢(shì)顯赫，這樣那樣的，

洞察真理的睿智，值得自豪的品格，

高于那一切。

As come it will(25) for a' that,

That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth,

Shall bear the gree(26), an' a' that!

英文注釋：

(1)for a'that=for all that，in spite of all that，盡管有此種種。

(2)Is there…an'a'that?這句有省略，等于 is there anyone who，because of honest poverty，hangs his head，and all that?其中honest=honourable，光明正大的; hings=hangs;and all that：如此等等。

(3)guinea's stamp：金幣(畿尼，值二十一先令)上的花紋。

(4)gowd：gold的變體。

(5)hamely fare：粗茶淡飯。hamely是homely的變體。

(6)hoddin grey：灰色粗呢衣(貧苦農(nóng)民所穿)。hoddin= hodden。

(7) Gie=give。

(8) tinsel show;華而不實(shí)的外表。

(9)tho'e'er sae poor：though(he should be)ever so poor，不管怎么窮。Sea 是 so 的變體。

(10) king o'men=king of men，人杰，

(11) yon=yonder。

(12) birkie：神氣活現(xiàn)的家伙。

(13) ca'd=called。

(14) Wha=who。

(15)Thou'hundreds worship at his word：雖然他一呼百喏。

(16) He's but a coof=he is only a fool。cool為cuif的變體。

(17)ribband=ribbon，綬帶(爵位的標(biāo)志)。

(18)mak a belted knight，封人為爵士。mak是make的變體，belted：系帶子的(表示有爵位)。

(19) aboon his might：在他的權(quán)力之上，不受他管。aboon=above;might=power。

(20)Guid faith=good faith，老實(shí)說(shuō)(發(fā)誓語(yǔ))。

(21) he mauna fa'that=he must not claim that，他得不到那種權(quán)力。意謂君王雖能封官，但對(duì)好人無(wú)能為力。

(22) The pith o'sense：真知灼見(jiàn)的力量。pith：[古]力量。

(23) pride o'worth：值得自豪的品格。pride：自豪感，worth：高尚的品格等。

(24) come it may=it may come,這可能成為現(xiàn)實(shí)。

(25) As come it will=As it will come，因?yàn)檫@一定能成為現(xiàn)實(shí)。

(26)bear the gree;carry off the prize，贏得勝利。

(27) It's comin=It's coming，這正在變成現(xiàn)實(shí)。It指下行開(kāi)始的That從句。

(28)brithers=brothers。
