10 CHILDREN	十孩子們

Come to me, O ye children !	到我這兒來(lái)吧，孩子們!
For I hear you at your play,	我聽(tīng)見(jiàn)你們?cè)阪音[，
And the questions that perplexed me	那些使我煩惱的問(wèn)題
Have vanished quite away.	頓時(shí)云散煙消。
Ye open the eastern windows,	你們打開(kāi)東面的窗戶(hù)吧，
That look towards the sun,	朝向升起的太陽(yáng)，
Where thoughts are singing swallows	那兒，思念是呢喃的燕子，
And the brooks of morning run.	早晨的溪水流淌。
In your hearts are the birds and the sunshine,	你們的心中有小鳥(niǎo)陽(yáng)光，
In your thoughts the brooklet's flow,	思緒里有溪水流瀉，
But in mine is the wind of Autumn	我的頭腦里卻只有秋風(fēng)，
And the first fall of the snow.	加上初降的霜雪。
Ah! what would the world be to us	啊!世界會(huì)變成什么樣，
If the children were no more?	如果沒(méi)有了新一代?
We should dread the desert behind us	我們會(huì)害怕身后的荒漠——
Worse than the dark before	比面前的黑暗更厲害。
What the leaves are to the forest,	正如樹(shù)葉把陽(yáng)光和空氣
With light and air for food,	當(dāng)養(yǎng)料給森林帶來(lái)，
Ere their sweet and tender juices	樹(shù)葉甜嫩的汁液還沒(méi)有
Have been hardened into wood, -----	化為堅(jiān)硬的木材，——
That to the world are children;	兒童對(duì)世界也是這樣;
Through them it feels the glow	世界憑兒童而感受
Of a brighter and sunnier climate	比樹(shù)干感受的氣候更加
Than reaches the trunks below.	明亮燦爛的光流。
Come to me, O ye children	到我這兒來(lái)啊，孩子們!
And whisper in my ear	貼耳朵悄悄告訴我：
What the birds and the winds are singing	在你們充滿(mǎn)陽(yáng)光的大氣里
In your sunny atmosphere.	風(fēng)和鳥(niǎo)唱的是什么。
For what are all our contrivings,	我們的一切書(shū)本知識(shí)
And the wisdom of our looks,	和一切發(fā)明創(chuàng)造，
When compared with your caresses,	怎能比得上你們的愛(ài)撫，
And the gladness of your looks?	你們的一臉甜笑?
Ye are better than all the ballads	你們勝過(guò)世界上曾經(jīng)
That ever were sung or said;	說(shuō)唱的一切歌謠;
For ye are living poems,	你們是活的詩(shī)篇，而其他
And all the rest and dead.	全都是死的曲調(diào)。
