前面說過在引導非限定性定語從句時，不能用that；還要記得，介詞后也是不能用的。例如："We depend on the land from which we get our food."此處的which就不能換成that。

在定語從句中，有些情況是必須用"that"作為關系代詞的。比如在there be句型中，只用that，不用which，不過這時候that也可以省略。例如：This is the fastest train (that) there is to Beijing.

定語從句中，當先行詞是不定代詞，如：anything, nothing, the one, all, much, few, any, little等時，關系詞只能用that，不能用which。當先行詞有the only, the very修飾的時候，或者先行詞為序數(shù)詞、數(shù)詞、形容詞最高級時的時候，都只能用that。

在定語從句中，特殊先行詞和關系詞之間的關系很復雜。有時候"先行詞"和"關系詞"可以二合一。比如：The parents will use what they have to send their son to technical school.

此處的"what"可以用"all that"代替。與此相似的還有whoever可以用anyone who代替；what可以用all that代替等。
