在實義動詞中，那些后面必須跟賓語，意義才完整的，叫做及物動詞（transitive verb）。英語中常見的及物動詞有：interest、worry、guess、please、surprise、love等，例如：I believe that the committee will consider our suggestion./Crude oil contains many useful substances.

和及物動詞相反，不及物動詞（intransitive verb）本身意義完整，后面不用跟賓語。比如：Birds fly./A stream of black smoke heaved up from the engine, then the boat stopped.
