① out表示“在外，出去”，作形容詞或副詞，常修飾動詞，也可用作表語。

The water will rush out. 水要溢出來了。

He stayed out very late. 他在外面待到很晚。

Mother is out. 媽媽出去了。

② out of是介詞短語，表示“在……之外，向……外”。

The children rushed out of the classroom. 孩子們沖出教室。

Fish can't live out of water. 魚兒離不開水。

She took the book out of the bag. 她把書從書包里拿出來。

③ out of還可以表示“出自，由于，缺乏，脫離，出于，不，沒有”等。

out of control失去控制

out of breath氣喘吁吁

out of patience不耐煩

out of fashion不流行

out of date過時

out of work失業(yè)

out of repair無法修補(bǔ)

two miles out of town離城兩里

out of表示靜止?fàn)顟B(tài)時，反義詞是in；out of表示動態(tài)時，反義詞是into。

④ out from表示“從某處出來，從某處來”，from后要再跟一個適當(dāng)?shù)慕樵~。

He picked a few bad oranges out from among the pile. 他從那一堆橘子中挑出了幾只壞橘子。
