517　other，the other和else

① other僅用作形容詞，作定語，不能作表語，泛指“其余的，別的”，后常接復(fù)數(shù)名詞，也可接單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞。

Other students will stay at school. 別的學(xué)生將留在學(xué)校里。

What other things can you see？你還能看到別的什么東西嗎？

Have you any other book/other books in your bag？你的書包里還有別的書嗎？

Can I meet you some other time？我能不能另找時(shí)間見你？

② the other作定語用，后跟單數(shù)名詞，是特指兩個(gè)東西中的另一個(gè)；the other后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞時(shí)，表示特指的人或物。the other也可作代詞，單獨(dú)作主語或賓語，表示特指的另一個(gè)。

This one is red and the other is white. 這個(gè)是紅的，另一個(gè)是白的。

I can only find one sock. Where is the other one？我只能找到一只襪子，另外一只在哪兒？

Where are the other students？

別的學(xué)生在哪里？

Where are other students？

（這里“別的學(xué)生”為心目中所指的那些學(xué)生）

one…the other表示“一個(gè)……另一個(gè)”，這種結(jié)構(gòu)只能用the other，不可用other。

One is a boy and other is a girl.

一個(gè)是男孩，另一個(gè)是女孩。

③ else用作形容詞時(shí)，也表示“別的，其他的”，但要用在疑問代詞who，whom，what，which和不定代詞anybody，somebody，everybody，nothing，everything，anything等后面。

Who else is coming？還有誰要來？

What else did you say to him？你還對(duì)他說了別的什么？

Do you want anything else？你還要?jiǎng)e的什么嗎？（=any other thing）

I need nothing else. 我別的什么也不需要。

Somebody else has seen her. 還有別的人看見了她。

Where else did he go？他還去了別的什么地方？

I have nothing other to do.

I have nothing else to do.
