223　divide和separate

① divide意為“分開，分離，分割”，指把整體分成若干份，常用作及物動詞，也可作不及物動詞，后接into，among，between等，結(jié)構(gòu)為：

divide sth. in half/into halves

divide sb./sth. into（by）

Divide it in half/into halves. 把它分成兩半。

He divided the cake between the two children. 他把蛋糕分給了兩個孩子。

Divide the eggs among yourselves. 你們把這些雞蛋分了吧。

Let's divide ourselves into three groups. 我們分成3組吧。

He and I divided on this question. 我和他在這個問題上有分歧。（不及物）

提示

①divide 表示“分割成許多小等分”時，后接into或in，不接to。

I divided the cake to four parts.

I divided the cake into/in four parts.

我把蛋糕切成四等分。

②divide 表示“分割成兩半或兩等分時”，后接in half，但可以說in two或into two。

He divided the apple in half/in two/into two. 他把蘋果分成兩等分。

② separate作動詞用時，讀作［'sep?re?t］，可作及物動詞或不及物動詞，意為“（使）分開，（使）分離”，指把原來在一起或靠近的人或物分開，結(jié)構(gòu)為：

separate sb./sth. into

separate sb./sth. from

This river separates the two countries. 這條河把這兩個國家分開。

He separated the good apples from the bad ones. 他把好的蘋果同壞的蘋果分開。

提示

①separate為非延續(xù)動詞，不可同表示一段時間的狀語連用。

他們分手已經(jīng)兩年了。

They have separated for two years.

They separated two years ago.

It is two years since they separated.

②“同……分開”要說separate from，不可說separate with。

很容易把好書同壞書分開。

It is easy to separate good books with bad books.

It is easy to separate good books from bad books.

③ divide和separate都可以表示“分開”，但有區(qū)別。divide表示按要求、尺度、計(jì)劃把整體分成若干部分（parts）；separate表示將混在一起的人或物分離開，使之不在一起。

比較

He divided the class into five study groups. 他把全班分成五個學(xué)習(xí)小組。（分成若干部分）

He separated the girls from the boys. 他把女生同男生分開。（分離開）

④ separate也可用作形容詞，讀作［'sep?r?t］，表示“分離的，單獨(dú)的”，可作定語或表語。

I want a separate room. 我要一個單獨(dú)的房間。

They slept in separate beds. 他們在各自的床上睡覺。

The two questions are quite separate. 這兩個問題沒有聯(lián)系。

⑤ divide的東西在一定條件下具有統(tǒng)一性；separate的東西沒有統(tǒng)一性。

She divided the apple among the children. 她把這個蘋果分給孩子們。

England is separated from France by the Channel. 英吉利海峽把英國同法國隔開。
