163　close和shut

① close可以用作名詞、形容詞或動詞。

（1）用作名詞，close表示“結(jié)束，終止”，常用短語有：

at the close of 在……的結(jié)束come to a close 結(jié)束

draw to a close 快要結(jié)束bring…to a close使……結(jié)束

At the close of his speech，people stood up and cheered. 他演講結(jié)束時，人們站起來歡呼。

The meeting has come to a close. 會議已經(jīng)結(jié)束了。

（2）用作形容詞，close表示“靠近的，親密的，嚴(yán)密的”。結(jié)構(gòu)為：

be close to sb. 與……靠近，與……密切

be close to sth. 接近于……

He is close to the professor. 他同那位教授關(guān)系密切。

The school is close to her house. 學(xué)校離她家不遠。

He is my close friend. 他是我的密友。

They keep a close watch on him. 他們嚴(yán)密地監(jiān)視他。

（3）用作形容詞，close可表示“比分接近的，勢均力敵的”。

That was a close basketball match. 那是一場不相上下的籃球賽。

（4）用作動詞，表示“關(guān)，停止，合上，閉上”，常用作及物動詞，也可用作不及物動詞。

Close the door when you leave. 離開時把門關(guān)上。

The door doesn't close. 這門關(guān)不上。

The shop is closed for a week. 這家商店停業(yè)一個星期。

She slowly closed her eyes. 她慢慢地閉上了眼睛。

The meeting closed at twelve o'clock. 會議在12點鐘結(jié)束。

② shut的語氣比close強，有“隔絕”之意。
