33　age，period，time，epoch和era

① age作“時(shí)代”講時(shí)，為常用詞，通常指具有某種顯著特征或某杰出人物、重要事件為其象征的時(shí)代，也指考古學(xué)、地質(zhì)學(xué)上的時(shí)代。

the age of Shakespeare莎士比亞時(shí)代

the Neolithic Age新石器時(shí)代

the atomic age原子時(shí)代

the Middle Ages中世紀(jì)

The Dark Ages黑暗時(shí)代(指歐洲中世紀(jì))

Cavemen lived in the Stone Age. 穴居人生活在石器時(shí)代。

② period意為“時(shí)期，期間”，指一段時(shí)間，可長可短，用途較廣。

the historical period of socialism 社會主義歷史時(shí)期

in the Twelveth Five-Year Plan period 在“十二五”規(guī)劃期間

the period of American Civil War美國內(nèi)戰(zhàn)時(shí)期

the prehistoric period史前時(shí)期

We lived in Beijing for a period of time. 我們在北京住了一段時(shí)間。

③ time一般用復(fù)數(shù)形式表示“時(shí)代”，指一段歷史時(shí)期或某個時(shí)期里與特殊經(jīng)歷相關(guān)的“歲月，境況”。

in modern times在近代

What wonderful times we live in!我們生活在多好的時(shí)代啊!

④ epoch指發(fā)生重大事件或巨變的“時(shí)代”，有時(shí)也用來指一個新時(shí)代的起始。

The invention of dynamite marks an epoch in history. 炸藥的發(fā)明標(biāo)志著歷史上新紀(jì)元的開始。

The years from 1860—1865 were an epoch in the history of the United States. 1860—1865年為美國歷史上的一個重要時(shí)期。

⑤ era和epoch意義相近，意為“紀(jì)元，時(shí)代”，但era更強(qiáng)調(diào)整個歷程，不單指一個時(shí)代的起點(diǎn)，時(shí)間概念上一般較epoch長。

The Industrial Revolution began a new era. 工業(yè)革命開創(chuàng)了一個新時(shí)代。
