Iceland Airwaves is a super hip, long weekend music festival that dominates the festival scene each year. It’s been around since 1999 and the name comes from its first location – an airplane hangar. Part of what makes this festival so special is the untypical list of performers. You won’t find old favorites or buzz-grabbing stars; this entire festival is for new names and bright faces who have something to share with the world.

The Airwaves festival is held in Reykjavik, Iceland each year and the town itself is now considered more of a festival city which is quite sleepy throughout the rest of the year. When it does open up to receive the masses of fans and festival goers the town turns into a cultural mecca with a nightlife scene that puts others to shame. Because the town is quite small in size, the natural beauty of Iceland is right outside for visitors to explore between. The city is set on a volcanic island and features a world-famous Blue Lagoon and amazing lava fields. Iceland Airwaves couldn’t have picked a better host city.

It’s no question that this festival can be a huge career launcher for new stars. Many music groups and bands head straight for huge American stages with massive crowds after rave reviews at Iceland Airwaves. Of Monsters and Men, Florence and the Machine, Flaming Lips, Fatboy Slim, and Wolf Parade are just a few names that have exploded since their Iceland Airwaves debut!
