Unit 5

Section I

Task 1

Professor: Hi, Sandra. How’s it going?

Sandra: Fine, thank you. Professor Lander, I wanted to ask you something. I applied

for a job at the campus bookstore, and they want me to go for an interview on

Thursday.

Professor: That’s great.

Sandra: Yes, um, but it’s at 2:30, and that’s during your class. So, would it be all right

if I skip your class this Thursday?

Professor: All right. But be sure to get the notes from one of your classmates.

Sandra: Thank you very much. I will.

Professor: OK, and good luck!

Task 2

Julia: Excuse me, Professor Lander. I was wondering if I could ask you something.

Professor: Sure, Julia. Come in. How can I help you?

Julia: Well, I’m applying to graduate school next year.

Professor: Oh, wonderful. Good for you.

Julia: Yes, thank you. And, well, I wanted to ask if you would write me a letter of

recommendation.

Professor: Sure, I’d be happy to. When do you need it?

Julia: By the end of next month. Is that all right?

Professor: Sure. No problem. Just give me the information, and I’ll be glad to write

the letter.

Julia: Thank you so much.

Task 3

Professor: Hello, Joel. What can I do for you?

Joel: I was wondering if I could ask for a small favor.

Professor: All right. What is it?

Joel: Well, I’ve been working at a fast-food restaurant most evenings.

Professor: Yes.

Joel: Um, I haven’t finished my term paper yet, and it’s due on Friday.

Professor: Uh-huh.

Joel: So, I wanted to ask if I could have a few more days to finish it.

Professor: Well, I really can’t do that, Joel. If I give you more time, it isn’t fair to your

classmates. You know what I mean?

Joel: Yes, I understand. I’ll take off work tonight so I can finish the paper.

Section II

Task 1

Charlotte: Hi.

Andy: Ah, great, just the person.

Charlotte: What do you mean?

Richard: I was wondering if you could tell me where I can get some bookshelves for

my room.

Charlotte: The local DIY shop is the best place—I could come with you if you like?

Richard: If you're free.

Andy: They're heavy things to carry though, aren't they?

Charlotte: Do you need anything else at the shop?

Richard: I'll get my list.

Charlotte: If you're free, you could help lift the heavy stuff.

Andy: Shall I take him to. . .

Richard: Here's the list.

Andy: Look, we were both thinking that perhaps we could both help.

Andy: Maybe we should go in your car!

Richard: This shouldn't take too long now with three of us.

Charlotte: OK, I'll just grab my coat.

Andy: By the way . . . what kind of car do you have?

Richard: Well, actually . . . it's a Mini.

Andy: How on earth are you gonna get three of us and all this stuff in a Mini?

Look, Charlotte, will you see this list?

Charlotte: Wow! All this?

Richard: I know it's quite a lot. Shall I cross a few things off?

Charlotte: You could start with the desk!

Richard: Oh, no, no, no, it's a flat pack.

Charlotte: I suppose you'll want help with that, too?

Richard: If you don't mind, I'm not very good at DIY.

Andy: Well, it looks like there's only one thing for it.

Charlotte: Yes . . .

Richard: Maybe I'll have to stay behind?

Charlotte: I don't think so . . . I'll stay behind and help you assemble the flat pack desk

when you get back.

Richard: Thanks.

Charlotte: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Andy: Erm, a cup of tea when we get back?

Charlotte: Cheeky! Better get going. The shop closes in an hour.

Task 2

Girl 1: That's a nice dress.

Girl 2: Oh, yeah.

Woman: This looks like a nice shop, doesn't it?

Girl 1: I love those little shoes.

Woman: Sweet, aren't they? Shall we go in?

Girls: Yeah.

Woman: OK, come on then, girls.

Shop assistant: Can I help you?

Woman: We're just looking, thank you.

Shop assistant: Go ahead.

Girl 1: This is nice.

Woman: Oh yes, that is sweet. I like that. Yes, that's nice.

Girl 1: This would look cute on your finger. I love the pattern on this dress.

Woman: Oh, that's lovely. That would be fantastic for a summer party. It's beautiful

fabric.

Girl 1: I love these shoes. Look at them. I need a pair of shoes like this to wear to the

party on Saturday. Shall we try them on?

Woman: Yes, why not? Excuse me, please.

Shop assistant: Can I help you?

Girl 1: Can we try these shoes on, please?

Shop assistant: Yes, what size are you?

Girl 1: I think I'm a 3

Task 2

Shop assistant: Try these.

Girl 1: Ouch, oh, they're too small. Do you have them in a larger size?

Shop assistant: Yes, we do. Would you like pink or silver?

Girl 1: Silver, please. That's much better. What do you think?

Woman: Mmm, yeah.

Shop assistant: They really suit you.

Girl 1: Can we buy them?

Woman: Yes.

Shop assistant: I'll take them to the cash desk.

Woman: Yes.

Shop assistant: Do you need anything else?

Girl 1: Mum, I need a new dress.

Woman: Yes, that would be fine.

Shop assistant: Have you seen these?

Girl 1: Oh, yeah, I saw that earlier and I really liked it. It's too small.

Shop assistant: Try this one, it's bigger.

Girl 1: Can I try it on?

Shop assistant: Yeah, the changing rooms are over there.

Woman: Do you like it?

Girl 1: Yes, I do. It's fabulous!

Woman: Thank you, I'm really pleased with that.

Shop assistant: It's a lovely dress.

Woman: It's beautiful, yes.

Shop assistant: That's £55, please.

Woman: Twenty, forty, fifty, five. Here we go.

Shop assistant: Thank you. Lovely.

Shop assistant: There you are. Have a nice day.

Woman: Thank you very much. Thank you.

Shop assistant: Bye.

Woman: Bye.

Section III

Well, when the kids were younger, we’d all go on vacation together. We’d take a

family vacation every year. We used to go to the beach, and it was a lot of fun. But

now the kids are older, and they don’t want to go on vacation with mom and dad!

They want to hang out with their friends and do their own thing.
