木偶奇遇記：Chapter 3

As soon as he gets home, Geppetto fashions the Marionetteand calls it Pinocchio. The first pranks of the Marionette Little as Geppetto's house was, it was neat and comfortable. It was a small room on the ground floor, with a tiny window under the stairway. The furniture could not have been much simpler: a very old chair, a rickety old bed, and a tumble-down table. A fireplace full of burning logs was painted on the wall opposite the door. Over the fire, there was painted a pot full of something which kept boiling happily away and sending up clouds of what looked like real steam.

杰佩托住在一間很小的地下室，只有樓梯底行道進(jìn)來(lái)一點(diǎn)兒光。用具簡(jiǎn)單得不能再簡(jiǎn)單，只有破破爛爛的一把椅子、一張床、一張小桌子。里面墻上有個(gè)小壁爐，生著火，可火是畫(huà)出來(lái)的，火上面有個(gè)鍋?zhàn)?，鍋?zhàn)右彩钱?huà)出來(lái)的，鍋?zhàn)釉跐L得熱氣騰騰，熱氣同樣是畫(huà)出來(lái)的，可畫(huà)得跟真的一模一樣。

As soon as he reached home, Geppetto took his tools and began to cut and shape the wood into a Marionette.

杰佩托一回家，馬上拿起工具，動(dòng)手就刻他的木偶。

"What shall I call him?" he said to himself. "I think I'll call him PINOCCHIO. This name will make his fortune.

“給他取個(gè)什么名字呢?”杰佩托自言自語(yǔ)說(shuō)，“我就叫他皮諾喬吧。這個(gè)名字會(huì)給他帶來(lái)幸福。

I knew a whole family of Pinocchi once--Pinocchio the father, Pinocchia the mother, and Pinocchi the children--and they were all lucky. The richest of them begged for his living."

我認(rèn)識(shí)一家人，都叫皮諾喬：皮諾喬爸爸，皮諾喬媽媽?zhuān)ぶZ喬老大、老二、老三……他們一家都過(guò)得很好，其中最富的一個(gè)討飯吃。”

After choosing the name for his Marionette, Geppettoset seriously to work to make the hair, the forehead, theeyes. Fancy his surprise when he noticed that these eyes moved and then stared fixedly at him. Geppetto, seeing this, felt insulted and said in a grieved tone:

杰佩托給木偶取好了名字，就埋頭干起活來(lái)，一下子就給他刻出了頭發(fā)，刻出了腦門(mén)，刻出了眼睛。眼睛剛刻好，請(qǐng)諸位想象一下杰佩托有多么驚奇吧，他發(fā)覺(jué)這兩只眼睛自己骨碌碌動(dòng)起來(lái)，接著一眨也不眨地瞪著他看。杰佩托給這雙木頭眼睛瞪得受不住了，生氣地說(shuō)：

"Ugly wooden eyes, why do you stare so?"

“木頭傻眼睛，干嗎瞪著我?”

There was no answer.

沒(méi)有回答。

After the eyes, Geppetto made the nose, which began to stretch as soon as finished. It stretched and stretched and stretched till it became so long, it seemed endless.

做完眼睛，又做鼻子。鼻子剛做好，它就開(kāi)始長(zhǎng)起來(lái)，長(zhǎng)啊，長(zhǎng)啊，長(zhǎng)啊，才幾分鐘，已經(jīng)變成一個(gè)很長(zhǎng)很長(zhǎng)的長(zhǎng)鼻子，還沒(méi)完沒(méi)了地長(zhǎng)下去。

Poor Geppetto kept cutting it and cutting it, but the more he cut, the longer grew that impertinent nose. In despair he let it alone.

可憐的杰佩托拼命要把鼻子截短，可他越是截，這個(gè)鼻子就毫不客氣地變得越是長(zhǎng)。

Next he made the mouth.

做完了鼻子做嘴巴。

No sooner was it finished than it began to laugh and poke fun at him.

嘴巴還沒(méi)做完，就馬上張開(kāi)來(lái)笑了，

"Stop laughing!" said Geppetto angrily; but he might as well have spoken to the wall.

“別笑!”杰佩托生氣地說(shuō)?？伤@句話像是對(duì)著墻說(shuō)的，說(shuō)了也是白搭。

"Stop laughing, I say!" he roared in a voice of thunder.

“我再說(shuō)一遍，別笑!”他用嚇唬他的口氣大叫。

The mouth stopped laughing, but it stuck out a long tongue.

嘴巴于是停了笑，可整條舌頭都伸出來(lái)了，

Not wishing to start an argument, Geppetto made believe he saw nothing and went on with his work.

杰佩托為了不耽誤工作，假裝沒(méi)看見(jiàn)，繼續(xù)干他的活。

After the mouth, he made the chin, then the neck, the shoulders, the stomach, the arms, and the hands.

做完嘴巴做下巴，接著做脖子，做肩膀，做肚子，做胳膊，做手。

As he was about to put the last touches on the fingertips, Geppetto felt his wig being pulled off. He glanced up and what did he see? His yellow wig was in the Marionette's hand.

手剛做好，杰佩托就覺(jué)得頭上的假發(fā)套給拉掉了。他抬頭一看，可是看見(jiàn)什么啦?只見(jiàn)他那頭黃色假發(fā)拿在木偶的手里。

"Pinocchio, give me my wig!"

“皮諾喬!……馬上把頭發(fā)還我!”

But instead of giving it back, Pinocchio put it on his own head, which was half swallowed up in it.

可皮諾喬不但不把假發(fā)還他，反把它戴到自己頭上。假發(fā)把他整個(gè)頭套住，幾乎把他悶了個(gè)半死。

At that unexpected trick, Geppetto became very sad and downcast, more so than he had ever been before.

木偶這么沒(méi)規(guī)沒(méi)矩，杰佩托覺(jué)得有生以來(lái)還沒(méi)有這樣悲傷難受過(guò)。他轉(zhuǎn)臉向皮諾喬說(shuō)：

"Pinocchio, you wicked boy!" he cried out. "You are not yet finished, and you start out by being impudent to your poor old father. Very bad, my son, very bad!"

“你這個(gè)小壞蛋!還沒(méi)把你做完，你已經(jīng)這樣不尊敬父親了!真壞，我的孩子，你真壞!”

And he wiped away a tear.

他擦掉眼淚。

The legs and feet still had to be made.

接下來(lái)只剩下做腿，做腳了。

As soon as they were done, Geppetto felt a sharp kick on the tip of his nose.

杰佩托把腳一做好，就感到鼻尖上給踢了一腳。

"I deserve it!" he said to himself. "I should have thought of this before I made him. Now it's too late!"He took hold of the Marionette under the arms and puthim on the floor to teach him to walk.

“我這是自作自受!”杰佩托自言自語(yǔ)，“一開(kāi)頭就該想到這一點(diǎn)!現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)來(lái)不及了!”

Pinocchio's legs were so stiff that he could not move them, and Geppetto held his hand and showed him how to put out one foot after the other.

他抱住木偶的肢窩，把他放在地板上，要教他走路。皮諾喬的腿僵硬著，不會(huì)動(dòng)。杰佩托攙著他的手，教他一步一步地走。

When his legs were limbered up, Pinocchio started walking by himself and ran all around the room. He came to the open door, and with one leap he was out into the street. Away he flew!

等到腿一會(huì)動(dòng)，皮諾喬就開(kāi)始自己走了，接著他滿屋子亂跳，最后跑出大門(mén)，蹦到街上，溜走了。

Poor Geppetto ran after him but was unable to catch him, for Pinocchio ran in leaps and bounds, his two wooden feet, as they beat on the stones of the street,making as much noise as twenty peasants in wooden shoes.

可憐的杰佩托在他后面追，可是追不上，因?yàn)槠ぶZ喬這小壞蛋蹦蹦跳跳，像只野兔。他那雙木腳卻在路面上劈劈啪啪，活像二十雙農(nóng)民的木頭鞋在響。

"Catch him! Catch him!" Geppetto kept shouting.

“抓住他!抓住他!”杰佩托大叫。

But the people in the street, seeing a wooden Marionette running like the wind, stood still to stare and to laugh until they cried.

可街上的人看見(jiàn)木偶跑得像匹小馬駒，只是停下來(lái)望著他出神，哈哈地笑啊笑啊，笑得無(wú)法形容。

At last, by sheer luck, a Carabineer happened along, who, hearing all that noise, thought that it might be a runaway colt, and stood bravely in the middle of the street, with legs wide apart, firmly resolved to stop it and prevent any trouble.

幸虧最后碰到一個(gè)警察，他聽(tīng)到人們吵吵鬧鬧，以為是一匹馬駒從主人手里逃走了，于是大膽地站在路當(dāng)中，跨開(kāi)一雙粗腿，決心要把馬攔住，免得闖大禍。皮諾喬遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)看見(jiàn)警察把整條街?jǐn)r住，就想在他兩腿之間一下子沖過(guò)去，可是沒(méi)成功，

The Carabineer grabbed him by the nose (it was an extremely long one and seemed made on purpose for that very thing) and returned him to Mastro Geppetto.The little old man wanted to pull Pinocchio's ears.Think how he felt when, upon searching for them, he discovered that he had forgotten to make them!

警察動(dòng)也不用動(dòng)，一把就抓住了他的鼻子(這個(gè)鼻子真長(zhǎng)、像是特地做出來(lái)給警察抓的)，把他交還到杰佩托手里，杰佩托為了教訓(xùn)他，馬上想狠狠拉他的耳朵，可諸位想象一下他是多么驚訝吧：他找來(lái)找去竟找不到耳朵，諸位知道為什么嗎?因?yàn)樗粋€(gè)勁兒地刻啊刻啊，竟忘了給他做一對(duì)耳朵。

All he could do was to seize Pinocchio by the back of the neck and take him home. As he was doing so, he shook him two or three times and said to him angrily:

杰佩托沒(méi)有耳朵可抓，就抓住木偶的頸背，他要把他帶回家，同時(shí)搖著頭嚇唬他說(shuō)：

"We're going home now. When we get home,then we'll settle this matter!" Pinocchio, on hearing this, threw himself on the ground and refused to take another step. One person after another gathered around the two.

“咱們現(xiàn)在回家，到了家，一定要算清咱們這筆賬!” 皮諾喬聽(tīng)了這句嚇唬的話，馬上就倒在地上，賴(lài)在那里不肯再走了。愛(ài)看熱鬧和無(wú)所事事的人一下子就過(guò)來(lái)，圍成了一大堆，

Some said one thing, some another.

大家七嘴八舌舌的。

"Poor Marionette," called out a man. "I am not surprised he doesn't want to go home. Geppetto, no doubt,will beat him unmercifully, he is so mean and cruel!""Geppetto looks like a good man," added another, "but with boys he's a real tyrant. If we leave that poor Marionette in his hands he may tear him to pieces!"They said so much that, finally, the Carabineer ended matters by setting Pinocchio at liberty and dragging Geppetto to prison. The poor old fellow did not know how to defend himself, but wept and wailed like a child and said between his sobs:

“可憐的木偶!”有人說(shuō)，“他不肯回家是有道理的!誰(shuí)知道杰佩托這壞蛋會(huì)怎么揍他呢!……” 又有人不懷好意地接上去說(shuō)：“杰佩托這家伙，看著挺老實(shí)，對(duì)孩子可真兇!讓這個(gè)可憐木偶落到他手里，他準(zhǔn)把木偶剁成碎木片!……”一句話，他們這么東一錘西一棒的，那位警察竟把皮諾喬放開(kāi)，反倒把可憐的杰佩托送到監(jiān)獄里去了。”他一路上監(jiān)獄，一路結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地哭著說(shuō)：

"Ungrateful boy! To think I tried so hard to make youa well-behaved Marionette! I deserve it, however! I should have given the matter more thought."What happened after this is an almost unbelievable story, but you may read it, dear children, in the chapters that follow.

“該死的小鬼!我辛辛苦苦本想做出個(gè)好木偶!可結(jié)果是自討苦吃!我本該先想到這一點(diǎn)!……，接下來(lái)發(fā)生的事情簡(jiǎn)直叫人沒(méi)法相信，我在以下各章里，將一一講給諸位聽(tīng)。
