外國人表達“叫板”居然用“play chicken”，有意思

人家說一句你總是想著各種方式去壓制對方，

to play dangerous games in order to discover who is the bravest

玩危險的游戲以比試膽量

It comes from mathematical game theory. "Chicken" in this usage means coward (we call people who are cowards "chickens" because chickens run away when people approach).

它來自數(shù)學博弈論。Chicken在這種用法中指的是懦夫(我們把膽小的人稱為chicken，因為人一靠近雞，雞就會跑開)。

A game of chicken is any contest with two players where neither one wants to "back down" or let the other win, even though not backing down can be very dangerous.

懦夫游戲指的是在兩名玩家之間進行的一個比賽，比賽中不管是哪一方都不愿意讓步，一旦讓步對方就會獲勝，盡管不讓步可能會非常危險。

The classic game of chicken takes place when two people drive cars at very high speeds directly towards each other.

Obviously, if neither one turns away, there will be a big crash and both will be harmed. The person that turns first is the chicken.

顯然，如果雙方都沒有轉(zhuǎn)向，就會發(fā)生大碰撞，雙方都將受到傷害。而先轉(zhuǎn)彎的人是雞(懦夫)。

這個游戲中的玩家雙方都是本著絕不讓步去的

為的就是顯示自己比對方更有膽量

從而取得勝利

所以現(xiàn)在就會出現(xiàn)這樣一種用法，

當你不服某人的時候

你就會和某人play chicken

以顯示自己很厲害

例：

Don't play chicken with him, you'll end up totalling your car.

別跟他叫板，要不然你最后會毀掉你的車。

When you drive you'd better not play chicken with bigger cars.

當你開車的時候最好別和大車去叫板!
