"He lives in the country"不是“他住在這個國家”

country這個詞就和中文中的多義詞一樣,

除了有“國家”的意思之外,

還有“鄉(xiāng)下,農(nóng)村”的意思

那么,

?問題就來了,

我們怎么知道country到底是哪個意思?

“He lives in the country.”這句話不可以翻譯為“他住在這個國家”,如果要表達(dá)此意,應(yīng)為:He lives in this country.

" The country" meaning "the countryside " is an uncountable noun."Country " as "nation" is a countable noun.

the country意為鄉(xiāng)村,country是一個不可數(shù)名詞。而Country作為nation是可數(shù)名詞。

the country=countryside

例:

He has gone to the country to recruit.

他到鄉(xiāng)間休養(yǎng)去了。

He is fresh from the country.

他剛從鄉(xiāng)下回來。

別人問你“Which country do you come from?”究竟是在問什么?

鄉(xiāng)村

The country, when it is used to mean any sparsely populated rural area far outside the bounds of a city, cannot be used with "which", because the countryside does not consist of discrete bounded areas but is rather a continuous swath of green.

country,當(dāng)它用來指遠(yuǎn)離城市邊界的任何人口稀少的農(nóng)村地區(qū)時,不能用which來提問,因為鄉(xiāng)村不是一個一個離散的有邊界的地區(qū)組成的,而是一片連續(xù)的綠色地帶。

There may be small villages dotting the countryside, but the country and the countryside refer to an anonymous stretch of rurality.

鄉(xiāng)村countryside中也許散布著小村莊villages,但country和countryside其實指的是一種不知名的田園風(fēng)光,并不是具體的地方。

So, if the question contains the word "which", it is almost a certainty that the question is asking about nationality.

所以,如果問題中包含了which這個詞,那么幾乎可以肯定的是,問題是關(guān)于國籍的。

例:

Which country do you come from?

你來自哪個國家?

China.

中國。

What area of Massachusetts do you come from?

你來自馬薩諸塞州的哪個地區(qū)

I'm from the western part of the state, out in the country.

我來自西部,在鄉(xiāng)下。

今天的內(nèi)容都學(xué)會了么?

歡迎評論交流心得~
