這句短語原是音樂用語，指某人僅憑聽過的記憶就可彈奏樂曲。由此意引申出來后，"play by ear"強調事件的“即興”成分，沒有計劃、依據當時情況而行事(to let things go as they may)，很有“邊走邊看吧，走著瞧，隨機應變”的味道。
